I’ve had epilepsy since being a teenager (now in my 40’s) and since the age of 21 my seizures had been well controlled. A bad seizure in Autumn 2020 left me hospitalised and I surrendered my driving licence as prior to this I’d only ever nocturnal tonic clonic seizures.
Losing my licence has really affected my mental health. Luckily I am home-working at the moment (partly health related and partly COVID related) and work have been good saying I can continue to do this for the foreseeable. However, I feel over-reliant on my husband and friends to ferry me around and am dreading everything opening back up again as I think I will feel isolated when the rest of society is allowed to travel more freely again.
I have made notes to look into bus & train passes as the restrictions ease and I feel a bit more comfortable going out in general. The bus stop is not far away but the local services are not good so it’s probably easier to walk / cycle and I’m only about a mile from the nearest train station which is on a good route for getting to larger towns if I want to go further afield.
This session has taught me to look into other areas and think about changes I can make and I know I need to focus on restricting triggers (tiredness & stress) in order to allow me to be as independent as possible and re-apply for my licence.
